A Design Fair At Karl Lagerfeld’s Former Home

SLIDESHOW: Some of the works that will be shown at La Vigie for NOMAD Monaco 2018.

NOMAD is a new series of art and design events held in extraordinary architectural locations around the world.

Last April, Giorgio Pace, a publishing and luxury brand specialist, and Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte, an architect and consultant, gathered together 1,300 guests in Karl Lagerfeld’s breathtaking former home on the French Riviera: La Vigie. The gathering was to launch a brand-new collectible design event called NOMAD.

Their idea was to “break the mould”, says Pace. “We, and many of our collector and industry friends, were tired of the existing ‘trade-convention-centre’ format. We felt it was time to introduce an intimate showcase that resembles a gathering at a friend’s house.”

Described as “the model for the future” of collectible design, the four-day event presented works from 13 galleries throughout the villa’s period interiors, sea-facing balconies and spectacular terrace, including pieces by Nacho Carbonell; Martino Gamper; Lindsey Adelman; Zaha Hadid; Jennifer Guidi; and Arik Levy. Highlights included a headline talk between architect Norman Foster and Design Museum director Deyan Sudjic, and a waterfront lounge furnished by Rick Owens and Michèle Lamy.

After a successful debut in Monaco in April 2017, NOMAD is set for its second Monaco edition in 2018, which will return to La Vigie from 26-29 April 2018.

Bellavance-Lecompte adds that NOMAD aims to offer a space for the world’s leading names, as well as young gallerists nurturing talented contemporary designers, artists and architects, such as Maniera, Apalazzo and Etage Projects.

“Geographically, the programme aims to be as diverse as possible, with objects crafted in the Middle East, South-east Asia, the US, Scandinavia and Central Europe. Galleries participating in the next edition in Monaco include Almine Rech; Carwan Gallery; David Gill Gallery; Friedman Benda; Gallery FUMI; Louise Alexander Gallery; Galleria Giustini/Stagetti; Galleria Luisa Delle Piane; Massimo de Carlo; Nilufar; and Sarah Myerscough Gallery,” says Bellavance-Lecompte.

The group also just staged a first winter edition in St. Moritz from 8-11 February 2018 at Chesa Planta, a spectacular 16th-century alpine mansion.
