Hermès x Hiroshi Sugimoto: The Carré Colour Code

Hermès returns for a third installment of its carré d’artiste limited-edition scarf series, collaborating with Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto.

Following two successful editions with Josef Albers (Hommage au carré in 2008) and Daniel Buren (Photos-souvenirs au carré in 2010), Hermès returns for a third installment of its carré d’artiste — where the French maison works in unison with an artist to present a collection of scarves — with Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto.

Inspired by the experiments of Newton and Goethe and the origins of colour, Sugimoto — known for his incisive yet stirring pictures  — spent 10 years meticulously and systematically taking polaroid images of subtly varying gradations that resulted in a collection titled Couleurs de l’Ombre (Colours of Shadow). Together with Hermès’ artistic director Pierre-Alexis Dumas, Sugimoto selected 20 polaroids to be transposed into silk. Hermès has produced a total of 140 scarves (20 designs have been produced, each in a limited edition of seven) and they can be purchased here.

Couleurs de l’Ombre is being exhibited at the Singapore Tyler Print Institute, 41 Robertson Quay, Singapore, until March 2, 2013.
