Blue Island
Size:
700 acres
Price: upon request (reported to be US$125 million)
This is the only private island in the Bahamas where you can land your private jet via a spanking new 5,700ft-long runway. With 700 acres of unspoilt nature, it is also the largest private island of the archipelagic state. Blue boasts more than 3km of white sand beaches, numerous scenic coves, a 90ft peak lookout point and ample space for two prospective 18-hole golf courses. It is 45 minutes by jet from Florida and three hours from New York, making it very accessible to those with the means, according to island manager and sales agent Steve Donovan.

Petra Island
Size:
11 acres
Price:
US$14.9 million
This island made it onto our 2015 list. Often referred to as the “heart-shaped Frank Lloyd Wright island”, this private isle on New York’s Lake Mahopac has been up for grabs several times via different agents and for various price tags. This time, it is offered through global real-estate firm Chilton & Chadwick for close to US$15 million. There is a 1,200-square-foot cottage and a seven-bedroom residence partly shaped by a masterplan for the island that Wright laid out in 1950. It remains an unofficial Wright house, as the foundation that oversees the architect’s estate has refused to certify it, as it claims that the house design never really left the renowned designer’s drawing board. But it’s still a stunner. The island also has a helicopter-landing pad.

The 29 private guest cottages are scattered around the island, mostly upon gentle sloping hillsides overlooking the ocean. The resort has been in the same ownership for the past 33 years, and a new owner is now being sought through St. Vincent and the Grenadines Sotheby’s International Realty.
