AOL Founder Lists Childhood Home of Jackie Kennedy

The Merrywood estate, Jacqueline Kennedy’s childhood home currently owned by AOL’s Steve Case, sits on seven acres in McLean, Virginia, near Washington DC.

America Online (AOL) founder Steve Case is selling Merrywood, an estate Jacqueline Kennedy grew up in, for close to US$50 million.

The future first lady moved into the massive Georgian-style mansion in the early 1940s, after her mother married Standard Oil heir Hugh Auchincloss, who owned the property.

“I always love it so at Merrywood — so peaceful ... with the river and those great steep hills,” Kennedy wrote as a teenager in 1944, as reported by Town & Country.

The estate is positioned on seven acres with sweeping views of the Potomac River in McLean, Virginia. Its location also provides access into Washington within minutes. Many have said that living at Merrywood was the catalyst that put Jackie Kennedy in the right place at the right time to eventually become the 35th First Lady of the US.

The 23,000-square-foot home was built in 1919, according to the listing by Sotheby’s International Realty and JLL. It has played host to Washington’s power brokers, entertainers, including Michael Jackson, and was visited so many times by President Kennedy and Jackie that the Secret Service gave it the official codename ‘Hamlet’. When Auchincloss’s brokerage firm ran into financial trouble, he had to quietly put Merrywood on the market. The estate has since changed hands four times and is now being sold by current owner Case, who purchased the property in 2005 for close to US$25 million.

Designed to reflect the traditions of Georgian architecture with bespoke interiors, there is a total of nine bedrooms and 11 bathrooms. The home also has a climate-controlled wine cellar; a master suite with his-and-her dressing rooms; a private study; an exercise room; and elevator services to all four storeys.

The outside area comprises formal gardens and plenty of space for outside entertaining. In addition to the main residence, there is a sun-drenched pavilion with full kitchen, exercise studio, changing rooms, indoor pool and access to the tennis court and outdoor pool.
