Celebrities Auction Shoes to Raise Funds for Barefoot Children

SLIDESHOW: Signed celebrity shoes for sale.

An online auction this month sees hundreds of pairs of signed celebrity shoes go on sale, raising funds to provide protective shoes for barefoot children living on landfill sites.

Until 20 November, anyone can bid on shoes owned and donated by Kate Moss, Chris Martin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Emma Watson, Oprah Winfrey, Lionel Messi, Roger Federer, Joan Smalls, Alesha Dixon, Theo Walcott, Cesc Fabregas, Bastille, Bonnie Wright, Brian May, Caryn Franklin, Ant and Dec, Dita Von Teese, Foals, Grimes, Helena Christensen, Jack Garratt, Jess Glynne, Jonny Wilkinson, KT Tunstall, Lisa Kudrow, Madness, Maria Sharapova, Matt Le Blanc, Mel C, Michelle Collins, Muse, Olly Murs, Rachel McAdams, Rita Ora, Rod Stewart, Rupert Graves and Annie Lennox.

The Small Steps Celebrity Shoe Auction is now in its seventh year, run pro bono by CharityStars.com. Last year’s auction raised approximately £45,000. This year, a spokesperson said it is likely to raise more. So far, £22,000 has collectively been bid on the shoes, with Emma Watson’s Sergio Rossi stilettos attracting the highest bid at more than £1,000.

All of the auction money goes to the charity, providing protective shoes for barefoot children living on landfill sites and also solutions to help take them off the dump sites and into schools. Small Steps has programmes in Laos, Cambodia and Romania, which include outreach, education, nutrition, medical and nursery projects for scavenger children and mother and baby units.

Founder and CEO Amy Hanson says: “We are always blown away by the support that celebrities show us, and this year, once again, the response has been truly phenomenal. These celebrity donors are really using their status to help create awareness for children in poverty.”

CharityStars’ managing director Robert Robinson said: “Our aim is to deliver impacting and sustainable fundraising solutions for the non-profit sectors so we are delighted to be running this auction for Small Steps and hope to raise lots of money for a fantastic cause.”
